Abstract:

My dissertation focuses on the study of the lyrics of the Uruguayan carnival from 1980 to 1985, especially in the murgas category. These years correspond to the last period of a military dictatorship in the country; therefore the content of the messages was heavily influenced by that. My goal is then to analyse those lyrics to detect the political criticism and the mechanisms used to circumvent the censorship imposed by the government. The proposal also comprises different types of studies, the objective of which will be to delve into the literature of the time and reach its main purpose: to raise awareness about this rather understudied aspect of Latin American literature, both for the moment in history that caused it and for its condition of mixed genre, between literature and music, characteristic of Carnival celebrations.
