Abstract:
On the second half of the 20th century Manuel Fernández y González publishes three novels set in the Castilian Court of John II of Castile: El condestable don Álvaro de Luna (1851), Don Juan el Segundo (1853) and María la Brava (1875). The common thread of the three novels is the character of Álvaro de Luna. They depict the conflict between the governance of a nation ruled by a useless king and the personal interests of nobility. The aim of this dissertation is to research the depiction of the favourite and of the medieval court in these novels, in which this author from Seville draws parallels between his own time, under Queen Isabella II of Spain, and the last years of the Trastámara.
