Abstract:

The aim of this research is to reread Euripides’ tragedy Medea. Firstly, the historical and social context of classic Greece will be analysed and the different versions of the myth will be reviewed. After that, a literary analysis of this literary work will be carried out, taking into account the characteristics of Greek tragedy and the style of Euripides. The aim of it is to clarify the stance of Euripides regarding highly debated topics that, in our view, could lead to wrong conclusions when the historical and social context is not taken into account: Medea’s otherness (Medea as a woman, as a foreigner and as a sorceress), importance of the imminent war, political meaning of the tragedy, stance of the author regarding religion and his intention when using rhetoric.
