Abstract:

Los cortesanos de don Juan II is a Spanish Romantic drama written in 1839 by the Valladolid writer Jerónimo Morán. It is set in the medieval court of John II of Castille. The conspiracies at court the play revolves around are a pretext to present, to the 19th century readers and spectators, the consequences of the poor governance Spain is suffering at the time. Written to raise funds to help the prisoners supporting Princess Maria Christina in the I Carlist War, Los Cortesanos de don Juan II is a good example of how Romantic writers rewrite 15th century Castile to strengthen the political claims of their historical theatre.
