The royal weddings of the Modern Age are an inexhaustible source of information. Many testimonials remain about such events. One of the most relevant weddings of the Spanish Golden Age, given the considerable amount of print material that resulted from it, was the wedding of Philip III and Margaret of Austria. In this case, the event was mentioned in more than twenty festival books, such as the ones written by Lope de Vega, Gaspar Aguilar or Felipe de Gauna.Program:
One of those books commemorating this event is the Tratado copioso y verdadero de la determinación del gran monarca Felipe II para el casamiento del III con la serenísima Margarita de Austria. This piece of work, of which we offer a study and a modern edition, provides valuable information not only about the festivities regarding this royal event, which in turn provides clues to understand the courtly world, but also about a very popular genre: news pamphlets.
This dissertation thus completes the picture of the written production regarding weddings in 1599, providing new information about the participants, the main characters, the festivities and the ways of telling about the event and publicising it.
