Abstract:
The Spanish chronicles of the Indies are a very important text corpus for history and history of literature for various reasons, such as the big amount of existing texts, the literary and historical relevance of some chroniclers, and the big information they provide us with and that covers most of the fields of knowledge that existed at the time. Or, in contrast to that, the inclusion in them of fantastic elements and excerpts of big literary beauty written by authors who were aware of their artistic talent. However, that does not exclude the fact that their intention was mostly bureaucratic and, frequently, political.
In the corpus of chronicles and apart from the big names -the Inca Garcilaso, Bernal Díaz del Castillo, Cabeza de Vaca, Las Casas- we find a series of 16th century and, above all, 18th century texts, composed by friars, which are quite unknown to the general public and not as interesting to scholars. This dissertation focuses on them.
